In the framework of the seminar “1959-1985, au prisme de la Biennale de Paris”, this session aims to discuss the symbolic, cultural and political value of the Paris Biennale from the 1950s to the 1970s, and its reception in two totalitarian contexts on both sides of the Iron Curtain: Spain and Poland.
The seminar Transatlantic Episodes (1950-1977): Crossings between art, politics and culture during the Cold War in Spain and Latin America will be given by Paula Barreiro López at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Universidad Nacional de La Plata, Argentina.
Taking place in Barcelona on March 6th and 7th, this workshop proposes to share and discuss methodological and theoretical resources related to the study of cultural and intellectual practices carried out during the Cold War. It is conceived as a join working session including presentations, discussions and shared readings.

On January 25th, Paula Barreiro López’s conference at the Edinburgh College of Art will address the processes of negotiation amongst art critics, artists and cultural agents during Late Francoism (1959–1975), highlighting questionings raised by the link between art and (left-wing( ideology.
On 18 and 19 January 2018, Artl@s project in collaboration with other organizations, organizes the encounter “Le defi de Caliban” (Caliban’s challenge) at the ENS Paris. Addressing artistic and literary debates on “the South”, this encounter will raise the question of its definitions through the lens of creation, examining the challenges and limits of such discourses.
Until March 4th, the exhibition curated by Olga Fernández López at CAAC Sevilla presents artists who try to visibilize some of the silences, misunderstandings or undeveloped possibilities of writings from the past, opening a reflection on exhibitions of the 20th century as devices for producing subjectivities, experiences and discourses.

Paula Barreiro López’s book Avant-garde Art and Criticism in Francoist Spain (Liverpool University Press) is a contribution to the history of Spanish art in the twentieth century. It surveys the shifts in the aesthetic discourse and artistic practices that decisively influenced the shaping of the avant-garde during Franco’s dictatorship (1939-1975).

The first symposium of the PRISME program “Entre sciences et fiction: la critique d’art à l’épreuve des mutations technologiques” (Between sciences and fiction: art criticism proofed by technological mutations), will take place on December 1st, 2016 in Rennes, France, with the participation of MODe(s) and Paula Barreiro López.
On November 23rd, 2016 from 9.45 till 18, Universitat de Barcelona. This seminar seeks to deepen the specific processes through which the modern canon is created, delving also into conflictive models that attempted to challenge its legitimacy. Through the contrasted study of cases, we will seek to create a common framework of reflection on the processes of construction and deconstruction of the canon.
