PRISME is a multidisciplinary research program that contemplates art criticism – beyond its aesthetic discourse – as a dynamic site that reflects the debates in society. Researches developed in the framework of this program are based on the archives of the AICA (Association Internationale des Critiques d’Art), focusing on the period from 1948 to 2003, with the aim of offering new perspectives on the current situation of criticism and to construct a transversal and transnational history of art criticism, seen through the lens of its sociopolitical, cultural, media and scientific realities.
MoDe(s) collaborates with PRISME and shares some of its research axes, namely the study of the role of art criticism in the definition, circulation and discussion of artistic practices and production in the context of the Cold War. On the occasion of PRISME’s first symposium “Entre sciences et fiction: la critique d’art à l’épreuve des mutations technologiques” (Between sciences and fiction: art criticism proofed by technological mutations), which will take place in December 1st, 2016 in Rennes, France, Paula Barreiro López will present the paper Art, science et technologie : Vicente Aguilera Cerni et Antes del Arte face au dilemme des “deux cultures” (1968-1969).
Abstract: En octobre de 1968, le critique d’art espagnol Vicente Aguilera Cerni présentait en ces termes les débuts du groupe Antes del Arte (Avant l’Art) à la galerie Eurocasa de Madrid (réunissant des artistes plastiques, des musiciens et Aguilera lui-même). Le groupe cherchait à reconsidérer la rupture entre la science et l’art en proposant une méthodologie (provisoire) de rapprochement. À la recherche d’une esthétique scientifique, Antes del Arte soutenait une plastique rationnelle, objective, technologique et collective. Les artistes se basaient ainsi sur des expériences optiques et cinétiques, fortement développées pendant les années soixante avec la création de groupes expérimentaux en Allemagne (avec Zero), en Italie (avec NT) et en France (avec le GRAV) qui introduisaient les principes de la psychologie de la Gestalt, s’intéressant aux processus de la vision et aux phénomènes de la perception.
The symposium examines the dynamic relations that have determined critical discourses centered on the scientific and technological evolutions of the second half of the 20th century.
