The aim of this conference is to study the different visual strategies developed and deployed during the massive Chilean social movement, called “estallido social”, which took place between October 2019 and March 2020. During this mobilization, the public space was the object of both a concrete and symbolic struggle, which was manifested through numerous performative interventions, resorting to different aesthetic and artistic resources. The objective is then to analyze these resources as mobilization and image-making tools in order to establish, from an interdisciplinary approach, their critical function and their symbolic value.
The conference also aims to report on the processes of archival creation, developed concomitantly with the mobilization, which contributed to amplify the visibility of collective actions, to produce a memory of the events and to appropriate their narrative.
In the framework of the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the coup d’état of 11th September 1973, the conference aims to show how the political imaginaries expressed during the mobilization must be understood in the context of a desire to break with the dictatorial legacy, while pointing out the international scope of the demands expressed, which intersect with the aspirations of many communities around the world.
This conference and the accompanying extra-academic activities (exhibition, screenings, round table, performance) are the result of an unprecedented collaboration between different researchers working on the visual arts of Spain and Latin America.
