Participation in the residency “Estéticas para después del fin” (Casa Giap, San Cristóbal de las Casas, July 14–25, 2025)

Paula Barreiro López, Tobias Locker and Sonia Kerfa, members of MoDe(s), will take part in the residency Estéticas para después del fin, to be held at Casa Giap (San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas) from July 14 to 25, 2025. Curated by Natalia Arcos and Manuel Borja-Villel, this gathering aims to critically rethink contemporary artistic practices by interrogating their ethical, aesthetic, epistemological and methodological foundations. In a context marked by global urgency, the residency positions itself as a space for collective creation and thought, interweaving activism, ecology and Indigenous knowledge, to imagine alternative forms of life in the face of a crisis-ridden present.

Estéticas para después del fin draws inspiration both from exhibitions such as Coreografías de lo imposible (35th Bienal de São Paulo, 2023) and Après la fin. Cartes pour un autre avenir (Centre Pompidou-Metz, 2025), as well as from the activities of the EZLN in Chiapas under the slogan La Tormenta y el día después (2025). The residency invites intellectuals and artists from around the world to engage with decolonial processes and to envision what has been called a Vida Nueva.

The participation of Paula Barreiro López, Tobias Locker and Sonia Kerfa aligns not only with key themes in their research (such as activist practices and the aesthetics of resistance) but also with the project Political Images and New Worlds to Build: The Visual Culture of the Zapatistas’ Journey for Life in Europe. Focusing on the visual and performative culture developed during the Zapatistas’ Journey for Life across Europe (2021), the project seeks, on the one hand, to conceptualize the journey as a form of shared knowledge: a common space from which to learn. On the other, it explores the role of image and creativity as forms of resistance and political action.
