The cycle of encounters Meeting with… proposes to establish a dialogue between the public and a guest (researcher, artist, curator …) who will share his/her lines of research and professional trajectory. The objective is to generate a discussion around issues of common interest.
The sessions consist of a brief presentation of the guest, followed by comments and open questions on issues of content, methodology, professional experience and practice. These sessions are primarily directed at young researchers, however, they are open to students, researchers and interested public.
Isabel Plante (Buenos Aires, 1971) is a visiting professor of Art History at UGA 2020.
Phd in Art History from the University of Buenos Aires. She continued her doctoral studies thanks to a scholarship from the National Council of Science and Technology (CONICET) and another from the J. Paul Getty Foundation at the National Institute of Art History (Paris). She published “Argentinos de París. Arte y viajes culturales durante los años sesenta” (2013). Since 2013, she has been a member of CONICET as a researcher at the Institute of Advanced Studies in Social Sciences of the National University of San Martín (IDAES-UNSAM), Argentina.
Isabel Plante is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Argentine Center for Researchers in Art (CAIA) since 2013. She is also professor at IDAES-UNSAM’s Specialized Master’s Program in Argentine and Latin American Art History. She also co-directs research projects in the framework of UNSAM: “Political Graphics and Visual Culture in the Sixties and Seventies. Catalogue, conservation and research of Ricardo Carpani’s archives” and “The Argentine ‘invencionismo’ between tradition and material and formal innovation”, a project associated with the research “The Material of Form: Industrialism and the Latin American Avant-Garde”, financed by the J. Paul Getty Foundation.
Her current research is entitled “International Circulation of Cuban Posters and Chilean Arpilleras during the Sixties and Seventies: History of These Emblematic Latin American Visual Artifacts”. The Cuban posters and Chilean arpilleras are a visual record of the protest, resistance and international solidarity movements launched from Latin America during the politically turbulent period of the 1960s and 1970s, when revolutionary processes were gradually eclipsed by the establishment of dictatorial regimes, protected by the global geopolitics of the Cold War. Produced in different contexts, posters and arpilleras are characterized by a different materiality and visual dimension, but both are intended for international circulation. In fact, these visual productions have been sent, exhibited and collected in several European cities, establishing themselves as emblematic images of a revolutionary Latin America. This project proposes to study these visual artifacts, which are not limited to the sphere of the Arts (with a capital “A”). The posters and the arpilleras are crossed by tensions between “great art” and “minor culture”, cultural industry and counter-culture, between artistic practice and craft production, between “First World” and “Third World”.
